Your file is read from your device, processed there, and handed back as a download — it is never sent to a SmilingPDF server, so there is nothing for us to store, read, or lose. How does image compression work?
Your image is decoded in the browser, optionally scaled down, and re-encoded at a lower quality. JPGs and opaque PNGs are converted to JPEG, where quality makes the biggest difference. A PNG with real transparency stays PNG, since JPEG can't store transparency.
Will my transparent PNG lose its transparency?
No. If any pixel in the image is actually transparent, the output stays PNG. Only a PNG that turns out to be fully opaque (a screenshot, for example) is converted to JPEG for a much bigger size reduction.
What does 'aim for a size' do?
It tries several quality settings and keeps the best-looking one that comes in under the size you asked for. If nothing fits, you get the smallest version it managed, and it tells you it fell short.
Can I compress multiple images at once?
Yes — upload as many as you like and they are packaged into a single ZIP. A target size applies to each image individually.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens inside your browser, so your images never leave your device.
