What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (and its close relative HEIF) is the photo format iPhones have used by default since iOS 11. It compresses better than JPG, but almost nothing outside Apple's own apps can open it — Windows, Android and most web tools can't display it at all.
How does the conversion work?
Your HEIC photo is decoded entirely in your browser using a WebAssembly build of libheif, then re-encoded as a JPG. Nothing is uploaded — the whole conversion happens on your device.
