Frequently asked questions

Got questions? We've got answers.

What is the audit trail?

A separate PDF listing the signer name, date/time, document ID, and which pages were signed.

Can I place multiple signatures?

Does this work on mobile?

Yes. The draw mode supports touch/finger drawing on any touchscreen device.

No. Everything happens 100% in your browser. Your file never leaves your device.

Sign PDF lets you add a signature to a document and place it exactly where it needs to go, without printing, signing on paper, and scanning back in. Create a signature by drawing it with your mouse or finger, typing it, or uploading an image of an existing one, then click anywhere on the page to drop it — it lands as a small, movable box you position precisely rather than committing to a fixed spot.

Once placed, a signature isn't fixed in size, angle, or position. Drag it to move it, pull any corner to resize it while the opposite corner stays anchored, or open its rotate control for a slider and angle presets (including 45° and 90°) to angle it to match a signature line that isn't perfectly horizontal. A duplicate control on each placement offers two shortcuts: drop another copy in roughly the same spot, or repeat the exact same placement across every other page of the document in one click — useful for initialling every page of a multi-page contract without placing it thirty times by hand.

Downloading gives you two distinct files, not one. Download Signed PDF produces the actual signed document with your signatures embedded directly into the page content. Audit Trail PDF produces a separate record — a document ID, the file name, when it was signed, how many placements were made and roughly where on each page — that you can keep alongside the signed file as a lightweight paper trail of the signing event itself.

This is a tool for placing a signature image onto a document you control, not a managed e-signature platform — there's no multi-party signing workflow, no email-based signing request sent to someone else, and no server-side record of who signed what. For a single person signing their own copy of a document — countersigning a form, initialling a lease, signing off on an invoice before sending it on — that's exactly the right amount of tool, without an account, a subscription, or a document ever leaving your device to get there.

What you can do

  • Create a signature by drawing it, typing it, or uploading an image.
  • Move, resize from any corner, and rotate to any angle after placing it.
  • Repeat on all pages to initial a multi-page document in one click.
  • Download Signed PDF, plus a separate Audit Trail PDF of the signing event.

How it works

  1. 1Drop your PDF file onto the page — it renders page by page for you to work with.
  2. 2Click Create Signature, then draw, type, or upload your signature in the modal.
  3. 3Click anywhere on the page to place it, then drag to move or use the corner handles to resize.
  4. 4Open the rotate control for an angle slider and presets, or the duplicate control to copy it or repeat it across every page.
  5. 5Click Download Signed PDF for the finished document, or Audit Trail PDF for a separate record of the signing.

Why use SmilingPDF for this

  • Signatures are fully adjustable after placement — move, resize from any corner, and rotate to any angle — instead of a fixed-size stamp dropped wherever you first click.
  • Repeat on all pages places the same signature or initial across every other page in one click, built for multi-page contracts that need initialling throughout.
  • A separate Audit Trail PDF gives you a record of the signing event — document ID, timestamp, and placement positions — independent from the signed file itself.
  • Signature creation, placement, and the final PDF are all handled in your browser; neither your signature image nor your document is ever uploaded to a server.

This tool runs inside your browser tab. Your file is read from your device, processed there, and handed back as a download — it is never sent to a SmilingPDF server, so there is nothing for us to store, read, or lose. You can check for yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and run the tool. Like most sites, SmilingPDF uses Google Analytics to count visits and which tools are used; that never includes the contents of your files. The privacy policy lists everything the site does collect.
