Merge PDF Files

Combine multiple PDF files into one document. Free, fast, and private.

Merge PDF combines any number of separate PDF files into a single document, in the order you upload them — a set of scanned receipts, a contract and its signed addenda, or a stack of chapters that need to read as one file. Under the hood it doesn't rasterise or re-render anything: each source file is opened, and its pages are copied directly into a new document one file at a time, so text stays selectable, links stay live, and image quality is exactly what it was in the original — there's no lossy re-encoding step anywhere in the pipeline.

The process is intentionally simple, because merging is one of the most common first steps in a longer document workflow and shouldn't require reading instructions to use: pick your files, check the order, and get one PDF back. There's nothing to configure beyond which files go in and what order they merge in — no compression settings, no page-size normalisation options, and no separate confirmation step. That simplicity is deliberate; the tool does exactly one job, and does it the same way whether you're combining two short letters or fifty scanned pages of a case file.

There's no separate "reorder" step before merging, because the order is simply the order you added the files in — drop them in the sequence you want the final PDF to read, and if you upload one out of place, remove it with its × button and add it back in the right spot rather than dragging it into position. There's also no cap on how many files or pages you can combine; a merge of fifty files behaves the same as a merge of two, limited only by how much your device's memory can hold at once, which for ordinary documents is more than enough.

It's worth knowing what merging doesn't do, so the result isn't a surprise: pages come across exactly as they were in each source file, so if your files have inconsistent page sizes or orientations, the merged PDF will too — nothing is resized or rotated to match. If you need the pages themselves rearranged after merging rather than just the file order changed, Reorder Pages picks up from there and lets you drag individual pages, not whole files, into any order.

What you can do

  • Combine any number of PDFs into one, in the order they are listed.
  • Pages are copied across directly, so text stays selectable, links stay live and image quality is unchanged.
  • No server-imposed limit on files or pages, and no watermark.
  • Remove a file with its × button to fix the order.

How it works

  1. 1Drag and drop two or more PDF files onto the page, or click to browse for them.
  2. 2Check the file list — files merge in the order they're listed, top to bottom.
  3. 3Remove a file with its × button and re-add it if you need to change the order.
  4. 4Click Process File to combine them into one PDF.
  5. 5Click Download to save the merged document.

Why use SmilingPDF for this

  • Pages are copied directly from each source file into the new one — no rasterising or re-encoding, so text, links, and image quality come through exactly as they were.
  • No server-imposed limit on the number of files or total pages, and no watermark added to the result, however many documents you combine.
  • The merge runs entirely in your browser using pdf-lib; your files are never uploaded to a server to be combined.
  • Works the same for two files or fifty — there's no separate "batch" mode to find or pay for.
  • Pairs directly with Reorder Pages and Split PDF if you need to rearrange individual pages afterward, or pull a merged file back apart later.

This tool runs inside your browser tab. Your file is read from your device, processed there, and handed back as a download — it is never sent to a SmilingPDF server, so there is nothing for us to store, read, or lose. You can check for yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and run the tool. Like most sites, SmilingPDF uses Google Analytics to count visits and which tools are used; that never includes the contents of your files. The privacy policy lists everything the site does collect.
