Convert Word to PDF Online

Convert your Word document into a PDF file. Free and private.

Word to PDF turns a .docx file into a paginated PDF right in your browser. It extracts the document's text with its paragraph breaks and lays it out on clean pages, which suits text-heavy documents such as letters, notes and plain reports. It is a text conversion, not a full Word renderer: images, tables, columns and custom fonts are not reproduced, so when layout matters, export to PDF from Word itself.

What you can do

  • Converts the text and paragraph breaks of a .docx into a paginated PDF.
  • No server-imposed file-size or page limit.
  • If any characters can't be stored in the PDF (emoji, most non-Latin scripts), you are told how many were left out instead of finding out later.

How it works

  1. 1Drop your .docx file onto the page. An older .doc file needs to be saved as .docx in Word first.
  2. 2Click Process File — the text is laid out into pages.
  3. 3Click Download to save the PDF.

Your file is read from your device, processed there, and handed back as a download — it is never sent to a SmilingPDF server, so there is nothing for us to store, read, or lose. You can check for yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and run the tool. Like most sites, SmilingPDF uses Google Analytics to count visits and which tools are used; that never includes the contents of your files. The privacy policy lists everything the site does collect.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Got questions? We've got answers.

How do I convert Word to PDF?

Upload your .docx file and click Process. The text is extracted and laid out into a paginated PDF, which downloads automatically.

Does it preserve formatting, images, and tables?

This tool converts the document's text content with paragraph breaks and pagination. Complex formatting like images, tables, columns, and custom fonts aren't reproduced.

Does it work with .doc files (older Word format)?

This tool supports the modern .docx format. If you have an older .doc file, save it as .docx in Word first (File → Save As → Word Document).

Is there a file size or page limit?

SmilingPDF imposes no file-size or page limit. The work runs on your device, so very large documents are limited only by your device's memory.

What happens to emoji or non-Latin text (e.g. Chinese, Arabic, Cyrillic)?

The PDF's text layer can only store Latin-based characters and common punctuation. Anything outside that — emoji, most non-Latin scripts, some symbols — can't be included and is left out of this PDF. If that happens, you'll see exactly how many characters were affected before downloading.

Is the conversion private?

Yes, everything happens in your browser. Your files are never uploaded anywhere.
