No server-imposed page or size limits — very large documents (100+ pages) may just take a few extra seconds to load, since everything runs on your device rather than a server.

The PDF Editor is a full canvas-based editing tool for making direct changes to a PDF — adding new content, correcting existing text, or marking up a page — rather than just running one fixed operation like most tools here do. It renders each page onto a canvas you can click and drag on directly, keeps a full undo/redo history of every change, and bakes all of your edits into the final exported PDF when you're done.

The toolset covers the changes people actually need to make to an existing document: Edit Text rewrites text that's already on the page — dashed outlines mark what's editable, and clicking one lets you type over it directly. Add Text drops a new text box anywhere you click. Add Image places a picture or logo that you can then resize from its corner. Shapes adds rectangles, circles, lines, or arrows. Freehand Draw, Highlight and Signature are marked as coming soon in the toolbar; to sign a document today, use the separate Sign PDF tool. An Eraser tool removes anything you've added — layered on top of the PDF, never the PDF's own original content — and Select lets you click back onto anything you've placed to move, resize, or restyle it from the panel on the right.

Every change is tracked as an individual, reversible step, not applied straight into the file as you go. That's what makes the undo/redo history meaningful on a tool with this many different actions available at once — drawing a shape, then rewriting a paragraph, then adding a stamp, can each be undone independently in the order you made them, rather than only being able to discard your entire session and start over. Nothing is written back into the actual PDF content until you export: right up until then, every edit is a layer sitting on top of the original page that you're free to move, resize, restyle, or remove.

What you can do

  • Edit Text rewrites text that is already on the page.
  • Add Text, Add Image and Shapes tools (Draw and Highlight are coming soon; use Sign PDF to sign).
  • A full undo and redo history, with edits kept as layers until you export.
  • The Eraser removes only what you added, never the PDF's own content.

How it works

  1. 1Drop your PDF file onto the page — it renders page by page onto an editable canvas.
  2. 2Pick a tool from the toolbar: Select, Edit Text, Add Text, Add Image, Shapes, or Eraser.
  3. 3Click or drag on the page to place, draw, or edit — the hint strip under the toolbar explains exactly what the active tool does.
  4. 4Use Select to click back onto anything you've added, then adjust it in the panel on the right, or Undo/Redo to step through your change history.
  5. 5Click Export/Download when you're done to bake every edit into the final PDF.

Why use SmilingPDF for this

  • One editor for the whole range of common edits — rewriting existing text, adding new text, images and shapes — instead of separate single-purpose tools for each.
  • A real undo/redo history means an edit you don't like is one click to reverse, not a re-upload of the original file.
  • The Eraser only ever removes what you've added on top — the PDF's own original content is never at risk of being erased by mistake.
  • Nothing is committed back into the PDF's actual content until you export, so you can freely rearrange or discard edits mid-session.
  • All rendering and editing happens on-canvas in your browser; the PDF is never uploaded anywhere to be edited.

This tool runs inside your browser tab. Your file is read from your device, processed there, and handed back as a download — it is never sent to a SmilingPDF server, so there is nothing for us to store, read, or lose. You can check for yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and run the tool. Like most sites, SmilingPDF uses Google Analytics to count visits and which tools are used; that never includes the contents of your files. The privacy policy lists everything the site does collect.
