Remove PDF Metadata Online

Strip a PDF's title, author, and every other hidden property in one click.

Remove PDF Metadata clears a PDF's hidden self-description in one click: Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer and the created and modified dates, plus the separate XMP metadata packet most PDF writers attach. Pages, text, images and layout are untouched. Use PDF Metadata Editor if you would rather change individual fields.

What you can do

  • Strips every info-dictionary field and the XMP metadata packet.
  • Nothing is quietly added back when the file is saved.
  • Pages, text, images and layout are untouched.
  • One click — no form to fill in.

How it works

  1. 1Drop your PDF onto the page.
  2. 2Click Process File.
  3. 3Click Download to save the cleaned PDF.

Why use SmilingPDF for this

  • Useful before sharing a file you don't want to carry your name, software or dates.
  • The document looks and behaves exactly the same afterwards.
  • Done entirely on your device.

This tool runs inside your browser tab. Your file is read from your device, processed there, and handed back as a download — it is never sent to a SmilingPDF server, so there is nothing for us to store, read, or lose. You can check for yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and run the tool. Like most sites, SmilingPDF uses Google Analytics to count visits and which tools are used; that never includes the contents of your files. The privacy policy lists everything the site does collect.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Got questions? We've got answers.

What does this remove?

Every field in the document's info dictionary — Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, and the Created/Modified dates — plus the separate XMP metadata packet most PDF writers attach alongside it, which repeats much of the same data.

How is this different from PDF Metadata Editor?

Same underlying strip, one click instead of a form. PDF Metadata Editor lets you view and edit individual fields — useful for correcting an author name, say. This tool skips straight to clearing everything, for when you just want a clean file.

Will the PDF still open and look the same?

Yes. Only the document's self-description is removed — the pages, text, images, and layout are untouched.

Does it remove metadata pdf-lib itself would add back?

Yes — the file is loaded with metadata auto-update disabled, so nothing re-populates the Producer or Modified date fields on save the way it normally would.

Is there a file size or page limit?

SmilingPDF imposes no limits. Processing happens in your browser, so it depends on your device memory.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is read and rewritten entirely in your browser — it never leaves your device.
