PDF Word Counter gives a full word count for your PDF — words, characters (with and without spaces), page count, words per page, and an estimated reading time, plus a per-page breakdown — for anyone checking a document against a word limit: an assignment, an article draft, or a submission with a strict cap. It works on any PDF that has a real text layer rather than scanned page images, and if it doesn't, the tool detects that and offers to send you to OCR first.
What you can do
- Words, characters (with and without spaces), pages, words per page and an estimated reading time.
- A per-page breakdown of words and characters.
- Detects a scanned PDF with no text layer and points you to OCR.
How it works
- 1Drop your PDF onto the page, then click Count words.
- 2Read the word count for your PDF straight off the Words card.
- 3Check Characters, Pages, and Reading time in the cards next to it.
- 4Open Per-page breakdown to see the word and character count for each individual page.
- 5If the count reads zero, the tool flags it as a likely scan and links straight to OCR PDF — run that first, then count the result.
Why use SmilingPDF for this
- A per-page breakdown, not just a document-wide total — useful for checking one section against a limit.
- Reading time and words-per-page are estimated alongside the raw counts, useful for checking an article or script against a target length.
- Text extraction and counting both happen in your browser; the PDF is never uploaded to get a word count.

This tool runs inside your browser tab. Your file is read from your device, processed there, and handed back as a download — it is never sent to a SmilingPDF server, so there is nothing for us to store, read, or lose. You can check for yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and run the tool. Like most sites, SmilingPDF uses Google Analytics to count visits and which tools are used; that never includes the contents of your files. The privacy policy lists everything the site does collect.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Got questions? We've got answers.
How does PDF word count work?
We extract the text layer from every page of your PDF and count words, characters, paragraphs and sentences. Everything runs locally in your browser — the PDF never leaves your device.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
Scanned PDFs contain images rather than text, so a word count will return zero for them. Run it through the OCR tool first to add a searchable text layer, then count it.
Why does the count differ slightly from Microsoft Word?
Word counts are inherently approximate — different tools split on different boundaries (soft hyphens, non-breaking spaces, ligatures). Ours tends to sit within a percent or two of Word.
How is reading time calculated?
At 250 words per minute, the average adult reading pace used across the standard studies. It's an estimate; dense technical material reads slower, casual prose reads faster.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Text extraction and counting happen entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.
