Checking whether this browser has on-device AI…
AI PDF Summarizer turns a long PDF into a short list of its key points: reports, research papers, contracts, lecture notes and e-books. Unlike most AI summarizers, it never uploads your document. In recent desktop Chrome, the browser's built-in AI writes the summary on your own device. Everywhere else, the key-sentence method ranks every sentence by how central it is to the document and quotes the most important ones, so nothing is invented. Pick a short, medium or detailed summary, then copy it or download it as a text file.
What you can do
- Key points written by Chrome's built-in AI, run on your device.
- A key-sentence summary in every browser, quoted word for word from the document.
- Short, medium or detailed summaries.
- Long documents summarized section by section, then combined.
- Running headers, footers and page numbers are left out of the summary.
How it works
- 1Drop your PDF onto the page.
- 2Choose a summary length and Summarize with: On-device AI or Key sentences.
- 3Click Process File.
- 4Copy the summary or click Download .txt.

This tool runs inside your browser tab. Your file is read from your device, processed there, and handed back as a download — it is never sent to a SmilingPDF server, so there is nothing for us to store, read, or lose. You can check for yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and run the tool. Like most sites, SmilingPDF uses Google Analytics to count visits and which tools are used; that never includes the contents of your files. The privacy policy lists everything the site does collect.
The PDF is read in your browser and summarized on your device, by Chrome's built-in model or by the key-sentence method. Neither the file nor its text is uploaded, and nothing is stored once you close the tab.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Got questions? We've got answers.
Is my PDF uploaded to an AI service?
No. Most AI summarizers send your document to a server. Here the text is read in your browser and summarized on your own device, by Chrome's built-in AI or by the key-sentence method. The PDF never leaves your computer.
What is the difference between On-device AI and Key sentences?
On-device AI uses the language model built into recent desktop Chrome to write the key points in its own words. Key sentences works in every browser: it ranks the document's sentences by how central they are and quotes the most important ones word for word, so nothing in the summary is made up.
Why is On-device AI greyed out?
It needs a recent desktop version of Chrome on a computer that meets Chrome's requirements for its built-in AI. Other browsers and phones use Key sentences, which needs no download.
Can it summarize long documents?
Yes. Long documents are summarized section by section and the section summaries are then combined, so reports and books work too. SmilingPDF imposes no page limit; very long files are limited only by your device.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
A scan is a picture of text, so there is nothing to summarize until the text is recognised. Run the file through OCR PDF first, then summarize the result.
Which languages does it support?
Key sentences works with any language written with spaces between words. On-device AI currently writes summaries in English.
