You can edit a PDF without Adobe Acrobat by using a browser-based editor. Open the file, click the text you want to change, type, and download the result. Nothing needs installing, and with SmilingPDF the file is processed on your device rather than uploaded.

Quickest answer: edit a PDF in five steps

  1. Open the PDF Editor and drop your file on the page.
  2. Choose Edit Text. Text you can change is outlined with a dashed box.
  3. Click a box and type over the old text.
  4. To add something new, use Add Text, Add Image or Shapes and click where it should go.
  5. Click download to save the edited PDF.

What you can change

  • Existing text. Rewrite a word, a line or a date that is already on the page.
  • New text. Drop a text box anywhere, for a note, a label or a filled-in field.
  • Images. Place a logo or picture, then resize it from a corner.
  • Shapes. Rectangles, circles, lines and arrows, for example to box something or cover a mark.
  • Undo and redo.Every change is a separate step, so one wrong edit doesn't mean starting again.
Tip: Freehand draw and highlight are marked “coming soon” in the toolbar. To sign a document, use Sign PDF, which is built for it.

Why edited text can look slightly different

A PDF doesn't store a paragraph the way a Word file does. It stores positioned pieces of text in a specific font, and that font is often embedded as a subset that holds only the letters the document used. When you retype a line, an editor can't always reuse the original font, so the edited text is written in a standard font. Expect a close match, not a pixel-identical one. For a heavily designed page, check the result before you send it.

If you can't click the text

If no dashed boxes appear, the page is probably a scan: a photograph of text, not text. Run it through OCR to add a real text layer, then edit. If you need a lot of rewriting, converting with PDF to Word and editing in Word is often easier than editing in place.

Why editing in the browser is private

The editor draws each page on a canvas in your browser tab and writes the edits into a new PDF there. The file isn't sent to a SmilingPDF server. The site does use anonymous analytics that record which tool was used, never what was in the document.

Frequently asked questions

Got questions? We've got answers.

Can I edit a PDF for free without Adobe Acrobat?

Yes. SmilingPDF's PDF Editor runs in your browser, is free, adds no watermark and needs no account. You can edit existing text, add text and images, and add shapes.

How do I change text that is already in a PDF?

Open the PDF Editor, choose Edit Text, click one of the dashed text boxes and type. The change is baked into the file when you download it.

Why can't I select or edit the text in my PDF?

It is probably a scanned document, so the page is an image with no text in it. Run OCR first to add a text layer, then edit.

Will the formatting stay the same after I edit?

Mostly. Edited text is written in a standard font because the original font may not be available to reuse, so it can differ slightly from the surrounding text. Check the result before sharing.

Can I sign a PDF in the editor?

Use the separate Sign PDF tool. It lets you draw, type or upload a signature and place, resize and rotate it on the page.

Is my PDF uploaded when I edit it?

No. Editing happens in your browser and the file is not sent to a SmilingPDF server.

Yes. SmilingPDF's PDF Editor runs in your browser, is free, adds no watermark and needs no account. You can edit existing text, add text and images, and add shapes.
