Add Bookmarks to a PDF Online
View and edit the outline that navigates your PDF. Add, rename, nest, and reorder bookmarks, or clear them entirely.

PDF Bookmarks edits the outline your reader shows in its sidebar — a clickable table of contents. Add, rename, nest and reorder bookmarks, point each at a page, or clear the outline entirely. A bookmark jumps to the top of its page at whatever zoom the reader is already using, rather than forcing a zoom level on them.
What you can do
- Add, rename and reorder bookmarks.
- Indent and outdent to nest bookmarks into a real contents tree.
- Point each bookmark at a page of your choice.
- Remove every bookmark cleanly, with no leftover fragments.
- Tells you how many web-link bookmarks it found but could not edit.
How it works
- 1Drop your PDF onto the page — any existing bookmarks load for editing.
- 2Add a bookmark, then give it a title and a page.
- 3Use indent and outdent to nest bookmarks under a heading.
- 4Reorder them until the outline reads the way you want.
- 5Click Process File, then Download.

This tool runs inside your browser tab. Your file is read from your device, processed there, and handed back as a download — it is never sent to a SmilingPDF server, so there is nothing for us to store, read, or lose. You can check for yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and run the tool. Like most sites, SmilingPDF uses Google Analytics to count visits and which tools are used; that never includes the contents of your files. The privacy policy lists everything the site does collect.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Got questions? We've got answers.
What are PDF bookmarks?
Bookmarks are the outline a PDF reader shows in its sidebar — a clickable table of contents that jumps to a page. They are part of the file, so they travel with it and work in any reader.
How do I nest bookmarks under a heading?
Use the indent button on a bookmark to tuck it under the one above it, and outdent to pull it back out. Nesting is what turns a flat list into a real contents tree.
Where does a bookmark take the reader?
To the top of the page you choose, at whatever zoom the reader is already using. It does not force a zoom level on them, which is the usual annoyance with bookmarks made by other tools.
Can I remove all the bookmarks?
Yes. Delete every entry and process the file — the outline is removed cleanly, with no leftover fragments in the saved PDF.
What happens to bookmarks that open a website?
Some PDFs contain bookmarks that open a URL rather than jumping to a page. Those cannot be edited here and are not written back. You will be told how many were found so nothing disappears without notice.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is read and rewritten inside your browser, so it never leaves your device.
