Convert PDF to Grayscale Online

Convert every page of a PDF to black-and-white grayscale — ready for cheaper printing.

Grayscale PDF converts every page to black-and-white shades of grey, mainly so documents print more cheaply and cleanly. Each page is rendered at 2x scale (about 144 DPI) and saved back as an image, so the result is not selectable text — convert before printing or archiving, and keep your original if you still need to edit it.

What you can do

  • Every page converted to grayscale in one step.
  • Rendered at 2x scale (about 144 DPI), sharp for the screen and most printing.
  • No server-imposed page limit.
  • A document with colour highlights or charts often prints better after a proper grayscale conversion.

How it works

  1. 1Drop your PDF onto the page.
  2. 2Click Process File.
  3. 3Click Download to save the grayscale PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Got questions? We've got answers.

How do I convert a PDF to grayscale?

Upload your PDF and click Process. Every page is converted to black-and-white/grayscale and the result downloads automatically.

Why would I want a grayscale PDF?

Mainly for printing — black-and-white printing is cheaper and faster than color, and a document with color highlights or colored charts often prints muddier in grayscale on its own than one converted properly first. It's also useful for consistent scanning/archival look.

Does it stay editable text, or become an image?

Each page is rendered and re-saved as a high-resolution image, the same approach Unlock PDF and Redact PDF use — there's no single "make this grayscale" operation that works directly on a page's mixed text, vector, and image content. The trade-off is that text is no longer selectable or searchable afterwards.

What resolution is the output?

Pages are rendered at 2x scale (roughly 144 DPI) before converting, sharp enough for on-screen viewing and most printing.

Is there a page limit?

SmilingPDF imposes no page limit. The work runs on your device, so very long PDFs are limited only by your device's memory.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Everything happens in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.
