How to extract images from a PDF (original quality, in one ZIP)
How to pull every embedded picture out of a PDF as separate files, when to use extract instead of PDF to JPG, and which image types can't be read.
To get the pictures out of a PDF, use an image extractor. It finds each picture embedded in the file and saves it on its own, instead of taking a screenshot of the page.
Quickest answer: extract images in four steps
- Open Extract Images and drop your PDF on the page.
- Optionally raise Skip images smaller than to leave out tiny icons and rules.
- Click Process File.
- Click Download ZIP. Each image is a separate file inside.
Extracting versus converting pages to images
- Extract returns the pictures that were placed in the document, at their stored quality. JPEGs are copied out unchanged, so nothing is re-compressed. Other formats are saved as lossless PNG.
- Convert with PDF to JPG or PDF to PNG renders the whole page, text and all, as one picture. Use that when you want the page as it looks, not the photos inside it.
Things worth knowing
- A logo repeated on every page comes out once, not once per page.
- Some old image encodings, such as JPEG 2000 or CCITT fax, can't be read in the browser. The tool reports those instead of saving a broken file.
- Text drawn as vector shapes is not an image, so charts and diagrams made of lines may not appear as separate pictures. Convert the page instead.
- A scanned PDF is one big picture per page, so you'll get the page scans.

Frequently asked questions
Got questions? We've got answers.
How do I extract images from a PDF for free?
Drop the PDF into SmilingPDF's Extract Images tool, click Process File and download the ZIP of images. No account or watermark.
Does extracting reduce image quality?
No. JPEG images are copied out unchanged. Other image types are saved as lossless PNG, so nothing is degraded.
What is the difference between extracting images and PDF to JPG?
Extracting saves the pictures embedded in the PDF. PDF to JPG renders each whole page, including its text, as an image.
Why are some images missing?
Images below your minimum size are skipped on purpose, and a few encodings such as JPEG 2000 and CCITT fax can't be read in a browser. The tool lists images it couldn't read.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The PDF is read in your browser and never uploaded.
